What is cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrency is digital money that runs on a blockchain, a shared record kept by many computers rather than by a single bank. Bitcoin, the first working cryptocurrency, appeared in 2009. Others followed, such as Ethereum, a network that runs programs called smart contracts, and stablecoins, which are designed to hold a steady value.
Coins differ in what they are for and in how much their prices move. The US Federal Trade Commission warns that the value of a cryptocurrency can change quickly, even by the hour (as of September 2026).
What do you need to buy crypto?
Four things make a first purchase go smoothly: an account, ID for the identity check, a way to pay and a wallet for the coin you choose.
- An account. Registration takes an email address. Account holders must be 18 or older and an adult under local law (see the Terms of Use).
- ID for the identity check. You’ll be asked to confirm who you are before you buy. Learn how verification works.
- A way to pay. Options differ between countries. Check payment methods and limits.
- A wallet for the coin you choose. Pick a wallet that supports that coin and its network, and have its receiving address ready. If you are new to this, start with what a crypto wallet is.
Which cryptocurrencies can you buy?
The coins on offer can change, so check the list of supported cryptocurrencies or browse all coin pages. Each coin page covers its price and how buying works: for example, see the Bitcoin price and payment options or the Ethereum price and payment options. Coinmama does not give investment advice, so compare coins by what they do and by how much risk you can take.
