Many people have claimed to be Nakamoto or have been mistaken for him. Nakamoto has never revealed personal information, however, he has provided an opinion on banking and fractional-reserve banking on occasion. Nakamoto claimed to be a 37-year-old Japanese man on his P2P Foundation page as of 2012, however, due to his native-level usage of English, others felt he was unlikely to be Japanese.

Some have speculated that Nakamoto is a group of people: Nakamoto might be a group of individuals or a genius, according to Dan Kaminsky, a security researcher who studied the bitcoin code. A developer named Laszlo Hanyecz, who had emailed Nakamoto, though the code was too well-designed for one person.
