What is Bitcoin Cash (BCH)?
Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a cryptocurrency created on 1 August 2017 as a hard fork of the Bitcoin blockchain. Bitcoin Cash raised the block size limit so more transactions fit in each block, aiming to keep everyday payments cheap and fast on-chain. The network uses the same proof-of-work mining and the same 21 million coin supply cap as Bitcoin, but operates separately, with its own developers, wallets, and community.
The rest of this page fills in what the summary above leaves out: how the 2017 split actually happened and who received coins, what the network is used for day to day, which address formats BCH wallets use, and the risks worth understanding before you buy BCH.

How Bitcoin Cash split from Bitcoin
- Bitcoin Cash grew out of a disagreement about scaling: one camp wanted larger blocks on-chain, the other preferred small blocks and layers like the Lightning Network.
- The larger-block side forked the chain on 1 August 2017 with an 8MB limit, raised to 32MB in May 2018; since May 2024 an adaptive algorithm adjusts it automatically.
- Anyone who controlled their own Bitcoin private keys at the fork held an equal BCH balance; custodial holders received BCH only if that company credited it.
- Bitcoin Cash uses the same proof-of-work mining and 21 million coin cap as Bitcoin, but operates separately with its own developers, wallets, and community.
What Bitcoin Cash is used for
- Bitcoin Cash is designed primarily as a payments network with low on-chain fees, though much of its activity is trading and holding rather than merchant spending.
- Wallets use the CashAddr format, whose addresses begin with q or p (or z or r for token-aware addresses since CashTokens), often written with an optional bitcoincash: prefix.
- Many wallets and services still accept the older legacy address format inherited from Bitcoin, which looks identical to a Bitcoin address, so checking which network an address belongs to matters.
- Never send BCH to a Bitcoin, Bitcoin SV, or eCash deposit address, because coins sent to the wrong network are usually unrecoverable.
- The CashTokens upgrade, activated 15 May 2023, added tokens issued directly on the Bitcoin Cash network.
Risks to know before you buy BCH
- Bitcoin Cash has split repeatedly: Bitcoin SV broke away in November 2018, and a November 2020 split left the Bitcoin Cash Node chain with the BCH ticker.
- Bitcoin Cash ABC, the other side of that November 2020 split, went on to become eCash (XEC) in 2021.
- Bitcoin Cash attracts much less mining power than Bitcoin despite sharing the SHA-256 algorithm, so its security budget is smaller.
- Crypto assets are volatile and lightly regulated in many places, so the value of Bitcoin Cash can fall as well as rise.
- Nothing here is investment, tax, or legal advice, and you should only buy Bitcoin Cash with money you can afford to lose.
How do I buy Bitcoin Cash (BCH)?
You can buy Bitcoin Cash on Coinmama with a credit card, a debit card, a bank transfer over SEPA or SWIFT, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Available payment methods vary by country, so the checkout shows what applies to you, along with the full cost before you confirm – see current fees. Coinmama has operated since 2013 and is non-custodial for purchases: your BCH goes straight to a wallet address you supply, and 24/7 support is there if a transfer needs checking.
Bitcoin Cash is one of many cryptocurrencies you can buy on Coinmama. If you are comparing options, Bitcoin is the chain Bitcoin Cash forked from, and Ethereum runs smart contracts rather than focusing on payments. USDC is a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle; stablecoins aim to track the dollar but are not risk-free and have traded below $1 in the past. Cardano and Chainlink serve different purposes again, and the same verification and wallet delivery apply to each.
